At Knollcrest, Children are welcome. In fact, they’re a big help.

Something we’ve learned over the years is that children grieve the loss of loved ones in their own way. We’ve also learned how important it is for them to experience how to process loss. In our strong desire to protect our children, we may inadvertently shelter them from something they truly need to comprehend.

Children do understand that a person they loved deeply may no longer be present and a part of their daily lives. They feel that loss immediately. They’re also very resilient and want to be part of the comfort process for others they love who have experienced the same loss. According to Becky Schrader, “It’s amazing how profound children are and how sensitive they are to the adults that they can see, hear and feel are experiencing sadness. Even the littlest children are sensitive to the grief of the people they love around them”. And they react. Just as one might expect. They can assure a family that things will be OK. They reteach the lessons they’ve been taught.

Becky has some advice. “While it may be uncomfortable to discuss death with children, it is important to understand that they are grieving too. Try to answer any questions accurately and honestly, at a level you believe they can understand. And don’t be afraid to simply say “I don’t know”. Try to listen and be empathetic without taking over their feelings, and be available for support as they express fears.

Knollcrest is a family funeral home. Bob and Elaine raised their children here, and we continue this tradition as a staff by sharing lunch together nearly every day. Our family dining and coffee area was designed with children in mind. We encourage families to bring items that make their children feel more comfortable. We have coloring books, crayons, games, toys, DVDs, and other child-friendly items to help occupy our little guests when they feel a need to shift their attention during the course of a service. Their presence is important; we want them to feel that they have a place here.

And if someone spills…So what.

Funeral Expenses Can Be Overwhelming.

Among all the other difficult emotions people face upon a loss of a family member, sometimes one of the greatest is the expense of the funeral services. Even Financial Planners have included this factor into planning portfolios as parents wish not to cause any undue burden on children or family members at their time of death. We’ve understood this at Knollcrest for a long time. Momentous expenses are always hard; college, weddings, moving to a new home, buying a new car; all of those are challenging, but many of them we prepare for over a longer period of time. The one expense we will all face, is some form of funeral expense at the end of our lives. At Knollcrest, we work closely with families to make this process as comforting as we can. From providing complimentary Pre-planning consultations, to assisting with processing insurance forms and providing all the necessary documentation, to helping complete the paperwork for Veterans to receive their earned death benefits. The legal process, insurance forms and everything else can be so daunting at a time when you’re experiencing deep loss. All that is something we’re committed to help with. We can offer more affordable choices and maintain a very dignified service. We will wait until insurance issues are resolved for our costs. The expenses should not be occupying the front of your mind when you’ve lost someone you love. We’re here to ensure celebrating the life of your loved one is seamless.

Our Role as a Ministry and Inviting You into Our Home

“When my wife and I put everything we had into building this home, we did so knowing we wanted it to be a home for the families we served”. Those are the reflections of Knollcrest Funeral Home Founder and Director Bob Van Staalduinen when describing the mission he and his wife Elaine embarked upon nearly 30 years ago. In fact, the first family to live at the funeral home were Bob and Elaine’s. Ever since, parents, children or some portion of their family have lived there. So, this isn’t a building to the Knollcrest Family; it’s home. It’s a place full of love and compassion and very well suited to help other families who are grieving and celebrating the lives of people they loved dearly.

The entire staff at Knollcrest (we refer to our staff as our family!) is dedicated to assisting families in need, ministering to them at the very difficult time of loss. Every detail, large or small, is our priority. Our mission is to provide an environment where a family’s only concern is receiving their family, friends and guests and celebrating the life of their loved one and providing comfort to one another at a time of loss. We’ll handle all the details and have our home ready to serve as your home.

We also specialize in Pre-planning and Pre-need services with a complimentary consultation with no obligation.

Selecting Merchandise can be overwhelming. It’s an opportunity to offer comfort.

An inevitable part of planning a funeral is selecting merchandise; caskets, vaults, urns, etc. This can be an overwhelming experience for a family who has just experienced a very profound loss. Because so many decisions must be made in a relatively short period of time, at Knollcrest Funeral Home we place a great emphasis on being especially sensitive and intuitive to families to offer whatever time and compassion they require before making very difficult decisions. “Mostly it’s about being there and ensuring that families understand all of the options they have. We’re here to provide information and understanding; not to sell any particular merchandise”, says Bob Van Staalduinen. What a family decides upon is entirely based upon their wishes and their comfort level.

Our families choose what is most suitable for their needs and their circumstances. Honoring a loved one starts with honoring the family members who are tasked with making these very difficult decisions in a short period of time. We’re here to help and honor those wishes and selections.

Knollcrest Funeral Home, Lombard-Caring for Veterans.

At Knollcrest we take Extra Care for Veterans. They deserve it.

“The sacrifice that our young men and women make placing their lives on the line matters to us, and we’ll ensure that all of the benefits that they’ve earned and are entitled to will be carried out and they receive them” states Bob Van Staalduinen owner and funeral director of Knollcrest Funeral Home.

Veterans are entitled to an American Flag, a headstone from the Veteran’s Administration, and a member of the Armed Services present to play “Taps” and present the American Flag to the family on behalf of the President of the United States and the thanks of a grateful nation. Our region is now blessed with the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery nearby, where all burial expenses are free of charge for a Veteran, a spouse and dependent children.

Many veterans are still unaware of the benefits available to them in grateful recognition for their service. When it comes to the men and women who wore this nation’s uniform, we’re committed to take the extra time, effort and care to provide everything they’ve earned. In fact, it’s our honor to do so.  For a full explanation and consultation on Veteran’s benefits or any funeral services, contact us at 630-932-1500 or knollcrest@knollcrest.com

Knollcrest Family Celebrating 25 Years serving your families.

Time has gone by very quickly here. Nearly 3 decades ago, Bob and Elaine Van Staalduinen decided to sell their home and mortgage everything they had to build Knollcrest Funeral Home. Faith is vital to the Van Staalduinen Family and Bob often refers to his role in helping families is as much a ministry as a business. Being there for people in their most difficult times is something important for this family; a mission to help them heal from loss and celebrate life. For Bob and Elaine, it is a blessing to them that two of their children have come to work at Knollcrest. Daughter Holly works in the office, now part time as she raises children of her own and Joshua, who is a Licensed Funeral Director. Adding to the excitement of a Silver Anniversary this year for the funeral home is a family wedding for Josh this August.

As our home continues to grow with our community, our family continues to grow along with it. Knowing that our ministry is continuing into another generation is a great source of joy for us and a renewal of our commitment to all of the families we have served and will serve. We thank you and we’ll continue to be here for you.

Pre-planning can be a long or short range plan.

Catherine’s mother sat in the lobby of Knollcrest Funeral Home while attending a visitation for a neighbor from Glen Ellyn area. Mrs. Galvin told her daughter that Knollcrest was where she wanted her wake to be. She said so because she thought Knollcrest was a pretty and cheerful place. Catherine’s father had passed away first, and his arrangements were also at Knollcrest. Catherine’s parents were both Veterans , and her father’s military service was especially important to him.  “Bob and the staff at Knollcrest saw to it that his military service was recognized.”  Two years later, Catherine’s mother’s wishes and military service were honored when it was time for her own services at Knollcrest.  “I’d recommend Knollcrest in a heartbeat,” states Catherine.  And she has.  Like every family we serve, it was an honor to serve Catherine’s family. For any questions about arrangements, Pre-planning or at need, please feel free to call us at 630-932-1500 or visit here.

We are here to serve you, day and night on any day you need us.
